Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) is Beth, an established author of means, and a New Yorker wrestling with doubts about her latest novel. AND tons of Fall TV recommendations.
We’re getting a Season Two of BAD SISTERS?!?!?! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh November cannot get here soon enough! Another favorite show that I wish more people would see!
You Hurt My Feelings was one of my favorite films I saw last year! I was pleasantly surprised by how the dialogue reminded me of my favorite Nora Ephron classics.
Thx for sharing Madelyn! It’s such a good film and the scenes in the therapist office with real love/life couple David Cross and Amber Tamblyn were so good! The stuff of life…
I loved You Hurt My Feelings. Saw it on a plane a few month back and I found it very relatable and honest. Will have to check out Mr. Throwback! Also, love love Let the Light In. It’s on a constant rotation for me. Thanks for a wonderful read per usual!
"You Hurt My Feelings" was just a DEVASTATING look at when you want to be really nice to a partner that is also a fellow creator. It's a movie of such small moments, and there's where Holofcener thrives. Also, Michaela Watkins deserves bigger and better roles, she's fantastic.
Yes! The small moments is something I’ve been thinking of. She’s a master of details and those details make for excellent storytelling. Learning a bit about this in the bio of writer/ director Elaine May I’m reading at present too!
Now I want to see Mr. Throwback even more! Also thorouly enjoyed the first episode of Only Murders in the Building. It's such a good show. I visited the Paramount studios earlier this year and it was so fun to see the scenes filmed there.
RE: The tragic preface you had to write. Take care of yourself. Those things are so tough and I know it's such a difficult situation and not an easy topic to share online.
Thx Aurelie! Were you at the Paramount lot while they were filming?
Thx for your words about my preface. It’s been a very hard time here. Appreciate you taking the time and the care to comment.
Unrelated, curious if you’ve watched “Interview with a Vampire” series? Was thinking in the realm of representations of queerness in TV. A Vox article summed it up:
“And in telling their story, Interview creates an emboldened commentary about how sexuality, race, identity, power, and oppression are all intertwined, and how these forces have throughout American history left these magnificently queer vampires (and many others) with no choice but to be extremely gay and do so, so many crimes”
I visited the lot during the weekend so there wasn't a lot of active filming but it was still cool to see some of the places I saw in real life on the screen.
I havent seen Interview with a Vampire but I only heard positive things about the queer representation in the show so it's been on my radar. I just need to find time for it 😅
I really enjoyed You Hurt My Feelings. I'll need to see it again before I can call it my favorite though. Holofcener has done a lot of great TV work too but I think my favorite of all of her work is Lovely and Amazing. It's got so much raw emotion and honesty that I find myself regularly wanting to check it out again.
We tried Industry. I fell asleep. Does it improve? Should I give it the 3 episode rule?
I'm getting more picky as I get older. We finished The Last Kingdom and the movie for the second time enjoying every last bit.
Yes to giving Industry another episode. Also, did you ever go back to “Sunny”?
I forgot about Sunny. Haha. Did u watch?
3 episode rule so no!

I think like “Industry” it will pick up a wider audience in the subsequent season. Might be a late bloomer

I gotta watch. You had me at Nora.

Thanks Valerie! Glad you enjoyed. Go watch “Mr Throwback” - it’s fun
Big Nicole Holofcener fans in the Mintz household

I wasn't sure about "You Hurt My Feelings" after reading the synposis, but your review makes it worth checking out. As usual! ☺️
Ah thanks! ☺️

Thx for sharing Dan! I want to go back and revisit “Walking and Talking” / Almost forgot that Todd Field is in it
That's a great one too!
