This is one of the shows I’ve been meaning to watch but haven’t gotten round to yet.

Congrats on winning the raffle and not getting killed out of jealousy!

I now have three shows to check out from your post, so thanks for that.

An old film I watched and quite enjoyed is Grace of My Heart, written and directed by Allison Anders. I found out about it because it's loosely based on Carole King's life. Great cast led by Ileana Douglas and an always fun John Turturro, but lots of familiar faces. I imagine you've already seen it. I seem to discover films decades after they come out. I'm now re-watching My Best Friend's Wedding because it's leaving Apple. It's so different from how I remember it. Something about those 90s movies is attracting me lately!

Thanks for the comment here Ellen. I've been really into 90s films too and just rewatched "Notting Hill" with Julia Roberts. It wasn't too bad and definitely part of the British "Friends"-packed rom-com theme that "Bridget Jones" banked on as well. There's something about a cluster of friends and ride-or-dies (Like "My Best Friend's Wedding") being your platonic people vs the romantic attachments that seemed to have picked up in this era. Like "The Big Chill" is sort of that but more about the couplings, as is "St. Elmo's Fire" - I think the late 90s to Y2K era were more about the friends, probably influenced by the hit 'Friends" - which I never loved though knew most of the story lines.

That's an interesting observation. Now you're pointing it out, Sex and the City and Four Weddings and a Funeral are popping into my head as well. Probably was the influence of Friends, and maybe Seinfeld a bit too (although that had a different vibe).

I think my next two "Characters that Work and Subplots that Don't" are "Notting Hill" (or "City of Angels") and then "Four Weddings & A Funeral." The latter I have such a strong emotional attachment to - I inscribed in my yearbook page from high school the W.H. Auden poem (Funeral Blues?) as an ode to my mother who had died the year before. That film was my salvation. I watched it so many times. I don't know if it will hold up.

I'll look forward to that. Very sorry about your mom, but great film to watch over and over. I'm just a big Hugh Grant fan no matter who shares the screen!

I, for one, think you need to rehire your former marketing intern. Her summary had me intrigued about My Lady Jane, but your recommendation sold me!

We are a good team then. Thanks for letting me know! I’ve passed it on to her.
