For some reason, the one that immediately leaped to mind was THE DEEP END, the 2000 film where Tilda Swinton plays a mom trying to protect her teenage son from criminals and just keeps getting deeper and deeper in trouble. Great Hitchcockian thriller.
What does it say about me that the first thing that came to mind was Amy Adams in Nightbitch? She expresses motherhood in that film in a unique and true fashion.
Both of my first thoughts on amazing motherhood movies are pretty heavy but reading this lovely collab post reminded me of TULLY written by the incomparable Diablo Cody, it’s such an interesting take on postpartum, and sleep deprivation and that huge shift in identity when entering motherhood. Another is THE IMPOSSIBLE with Noami Watts about the will of parents to save their children. I’ve o Lu watched it once (before kids!) and don’t think I can again.
Thanks Valerie. These are both such good recommendations. The incomparable Diablo Cody gets motherhood! And The Impossible was a heart-wrenching story - so good!
I mention this movie all the time but I love the psuedo motherly relationship Between Fly and Babe in Babe (1995) where she takes the little pig under her wing after he is separated from his mother and introduced to life on the farm.
I love this! Thank you for sharing. I had the same feeling with Charlotte, a spider, doing this with Wilbur the piglet in Charlotte’s Web. Thanks for this reminder. I cry every time I get to the scene where she has to “go away” - couldn’t quite get my head around her passing.
I'm not sure it's my favorite, but the mother-daughter relationship in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once was certainly a fascinating, complex one. Also loved 20th Century Women.
Agreed! I forgot about the Everybody Everywhere mother daughter connection. That was beautiful. Such a. Good choice. I liked 20th Century Women and it was a contender for me. Corinna Corinna was the other one. It was so hard to pick a movie this go around
I'm going to amend my initial answers. I'm Still Here and Fernanda Torres' portrayal was the most incredible "mom movie" (bu so, so uch more) I've seen in a long time.
It really was. She bugged me at times with not allowing herself to tell the kids that her husband (and their dad)was gone. I just found that decision so difficult to believe. It’s a different generation and I can appreciate that and yes to vocalize that he was gone would be to fully accept it but her actions did the talking (when they left the home) So good!
Yes to both of these! I adore Everything Everywhere All At Once, especially the mother-daughter relationship. Mike Mills’ 20th Century Women is so so good
I did contemplate a GG recommendation but I thought most would have seen it. I thought I might recommend a particular episode e.g. Lorelei graduating front biz school but in the end I thought fewer people would know about Motherland and it is really good.
Yeah, I’d have gone the same way to be fair! Motherland is excellent (also its sequel Amandaland. Me and the missus were expecting to be a bit meh but it is superb)
Oy, I had to write these down. Always looking for a comedy. Loved Orphan Black. And Almodovar has a wonderful obsession with women. Did he have sisters or a crazy mama?
Thanks! Almodovar loves women. From what I can tell no immediate explanation on the family front as to why! I know his brother and him are partners with his brother running production on his films
I love the international picks in there and the fact that I hadn't really heard of most of those shows and movies. I really enjoyed Workin' Moms and I totally forgot about the beautiful relationship in Orphan Black. I need a rewatch ☺️. Happy mother's day!
Beth, I saved this post to treat myself this week. So many great suggestions here (no surprise!) Happy belated mother's day!
Thank you!!😊

One of my favorites! It was actually one of the ones I thought of before landing on Mama. Hmmm… I’m thinking it’s time for a rewatch

It was initially one of my mine too but it’s also because it’s one of the more recent ones I’ve seen and features Amy Adams and dogs 😂

LOVE Parallel Mothers! Motherland and The Let Down are so true to life... it's like oof. I think I over-identify with Anna Maxwell Martin sometimes! 😂
Loved AMM in the recent mystery show, Ludwig, where she also plays a mother
LOVED Ludwig! Cannot wait for the next season.
Just watched her in “Death comes to Pemberley” - she’s great!
I loved her in that!!!
I am such a big fan of hers! If she’s in it, I make it a point to watch 🤩

You know her mother played her role in the final scene?
Yup! I wrote about the film and that fact here: https://bethlisogorsky.substack.com/p/im-still-here-2024-review
I loved this film so much.
Her mother is a famous actress in her own right and was in "Central Station"
Yes! (I don't know how I missed your write-up!)

Wot no Gilmore GIrls?

Sacrilegious I know! We went unconventional here.

So happy I could remind you of the joy that is Orphan Black, Aurelie! I highly recommend a rewatch. It only gets better with each viewing
So glad this opened you up to some new media!
Thanks Aurelie! Appreciate your support and YOU
