We should do another collab-- 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon. The best Kevin Bacon movies?

August is a funky time isn't it? Hoping season 4 of Emily isn't just a re-work of the first 3 seasons. Something fresh in Paris?

But with Zach Braff instead of Bacon? Braff is in “Bad Monkey” too! No shock as the producer is the one who did “Scrubs”

Emily en Paris is still entertaining

Not surprised at all by your percentage of Substack-based subscribers! You've created such a lovely community. I like it here, it's cozy. :)

Definitely feeling the August doldrums. We tend to gravitate towards comfort tv that we’ve seen before during times like this. Currently just rewatching Gilmore Girls.

An old mindless favorite.

Perfect lead into Fall show! I’m oddly comforted that I’m not the only one feeling the doldrums! August, why do you torture me so??

Thanks for suggesting Average Joe and Industry. I'm going to try them out.

I'm also enjoying Bad Monkey with its fun ambiance and kooky characters, and loved The Instigators as I used to live in Boston and the Afflecks and Matt Damon come from there and always capture it to a T. Plus they are quite fun and have great rapport.

Really enjoyed A Good Girl's Guide to Murder and just watched the film Mistress America on Max and enjoyed that as well. Catching up on movies I missed.

No, I probably won't see It Ends with Us as I've read the book and tend to avoid traumatic subjects. I use movies to escape!

I’m with you on all of this. Thx for sharing Ellen. BAD MONKEY is totally kooky characters and amen to that. It’s like “The Inheritance Games” books and why I love them. A good mystery of course never hurt buts it’s the characters that make it worth it.

I haven’t watched “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” because I’m waiting on my tween but I want to!! It looks fantastic. I never watched “Mistress America” but was curious about it at the time. Did you ever see “20th Century Women” with Greta Gerwig and Annette Bening?

Expand full comment

I did see 20th Century Women as I'll watch Annette Bening in just about anything and I find Greta Gerwig quite unique so I enjoy watching her too. I should probably do a search and watch those two in more things. You've inspired me!

Btw, Greta co-wrote Mistress America with Noah Baumbach so there are a lot of great lines.

I'll check out The Inheritance Games books as well. Have never heard of them but up for something good to read.

Heya, I am not able to comment on your latest post, but as a Spielberg fan and a person that shares his first name, I must correct your misspelling of his name. It's Steven, not Stephen. Not to be a grammar-policeman, but this is one that is a trigger for me. If you do write about the other similarly named director, Soderbergh, you should also use Steven. If you write about the genius American composer, you would use Stephen Sondheim. Okay, I'm being a brat now.

Vince Vaughan is one of those actors starts out annoying, but ends up redeeming himself. His show sounds intriguing, as does "Average Joe" and "Industry". It's funny, but since I don't stream, it's like the old days of waiting ages for US shows to come to Australia, only now it's waiting for them to go to DVD, haha.

I’m really interested in seeing Bad Monkey. I might have to re-up my Apple TV now.

Btw I just used this to get a free pass to see “sing sing” and got served with two months of free trial of Apple TV+ - not sure if it’s playing in your area but worth a try https://see.singsing.movie/armchairexpert

I’ll have to give that a shot!

I LOVE Vince Vaughn! Adding Bad Monkey to my list.

Interesting Substack stat. Mine shows that 25% of Subscribers come from the app, but 85%-90% read via email.

You’re spot on with your take on It Ends With Us. Emily in Paris… it took me an episode or two to get into again (that’s what happens when the break between seasons is too long), but now I’m invested. But I’m so team Gabrielle! The Curry show looks really fun. Hope I can somehow find it in Canada.

I want to see Bad Monkey. Looks great. Great discussion with the author of the novel today on CBS Sunday Morning.

We are currently watching The Decameron and Time Bandits. The former loses some of its charm after a few episodes but still worth watching. Only a couple of episodes into Time Bandits. So far it shows some potential.

I've been a fan of Pet Shop Boys since West End Girls. They have some new music out this year which is really pretty good.

I started “Decameron” and got two episodes in before losing interest. I love the actors and want to believe that they would only do interesting work but everyone needs a gig should probably be the warning on this show. And I saw that “CBS Sunday Morning” interview as well! It was entertaining and good to hear about the new and old Florida perspective. Florida is such a vastly different part of the country from anywhere I’ve lived which peaks my interest. I’ve visited the place a few times though. And didn’t know that about Pet Shop Boys so thx for sharing. But coincidentally the last song on my 80s cycling ride with Peleton was “West End Girls”!

There are a lot of shows I've started and lost interest in this year too. Maybe it is the humor and actors that have sustained me.

I've been to Florida many times. Parts of it are quite lovely. The politics and humidity make it less so.

There was also a special Pet Shop Boys concert film event earlier this year in theaters. It was quite spectacular!

Is the summer really still a dry zone for TV in the age of streaming? I feel that for 2024, but for the past, say, 5 years, it's felt like there have been excellent programming to check out year round. Maybe not on network channels, but on HULU and Netflix and Apple and Max, I can't recall a time, until recently, when I thought the options had thinned out.

I'm thrilled to hear that "Mr. Throwback" is a "throwback" to the days of smart sitcoms. And that Steph Curry is a decent actor! I'll check it out, as a Warriors fan and on your recommendation.

I'm definitely going to watch Bad Monkey. I have to watch anything that's named after what my wife calls me in the bedroom! Ha, kidding. She calls me Good Monkey.

I'm still trying to finish Fallout, which I'm totally digging, in between tennis tournaments (watching, not playing) and keeping up with The Bear (haven't quit), Industry and something else I can't recall right now.

Do you keep a spreadsheet of all the shows you watch/plan to watch?

My percentage of subscribers is less than yours from the app, but it's growing, as most new ones are from our community of Stackers. It has been exciting watching your Stack blow up, I have to say! I just hope all this acclaim doesn't go to your head and you forget the little people who've been here from the start! 🤣

Hahaha to the “bad monkey” reference. Seriously what is it about adding some wild animal into the mix of the show that drives our interest up? It’s like things can get bad and be dire but look at the monkey and be distracted.

I don’t keep a spreadsheet anymore (mostly because I don’t know how to keep up with it) but I try and see what’s coming on the reliable streamers (Apple TV, Hulu, Max, Netflix and Prime) in that order. “Slow Horses” is back in September so I know I’ll be watching. And I now subscribe to a Substack that’s focused on what’s releasing week to week.

I heard Vince Vaughn talking about Bad Monkey on a podcast and was intrigued, so I'm excited to watch now - thanks! Also the Breaking Bad mention has encouraged me to add Average Joe to the list, too... I know Yara is ahead of me with Emily in Paris - got to love it :)

Happy to be of service! You are right Camille should be pronounced with a y sound at the end. Like: Ca - Mi - Ye. Now I need to see how the say it in the show. It's tricky because the last sound is a short one so I think it could sound a bit like Cami to a foreigner.

Here you can listen to the name recording on the page because it's hard to explain in writing 😂! I knew this Olympics feature would be useful. https://olympics.com/en/paris-2024/athlete/camille-grassineau_1916070

Ok now I watched episode 1 and I have more thoughts 😂. First you are so right that they all seem to pronounce the name Camille wrong including the French chef boyfriend.

I think Emily tries hard to pronounce it the French way, the British dude just pronounces it the British way and the french boyfriend mimicks the English dude's pronunciation. It's funny to watch and I didn't expect it to be the name that would trip them up.
