The steamy Regency Shondaland production fogs up all the glass this season as it introduces a queer throuple; quiet, introverted love; and a love match over the age of 40.
I'm currently watching the original "Dallas" from start to finish. I have no idea what I've gotten myself into, but I'm too far in to stop now.
Up next will be the next round of the Euros (I'm DVR'ing them and watch after work).
I liked the Brats doc, but it felt. I dunno...incomplete? I'm not just talking about Judd Nelson and Molly Ringwald not appearing. Why was Timothy Hutton in it? Ditto Jon Cryer? Why was Anthony Michael Hall not?
Thanks Kevin. Where are you watching DALLAS? And my husband and I talk about this show at least once a week - it comes up more for him than me, but it was one of the few shows aired in Israel while he was growing up and he remembers it vividly.
Agreed on the noticeable absences and randos in the BRATS documentary. I had that same sentiment on some of the cultural critics. Like, one or two fine. I will always take an opportunity to hear Malcolm Gladwell so I don't mind that he's a bit of a random add. Also, I'm dying for a BRATZ documentary about the early aughts dolls that were all the rage. Then when people search for the BRATS documentary they hit that one and vice versa, creating this weird crossover event between cultural phenomena of their time. And also a clusterf*ck of "wth" moments.
Thanks Maria :) Look forward to hearing your take on BRATS (we have quite an active thread on it over here: https://substack.com/chat/280698 when you’re ready :)
Thanks for the quote -- I have no interest in Bridgerton, so I skipped to the recos. I thought I'd mention that the link/jump you added at the top didn't work for me, but I haven't tried on all devices yet. I tried on Chrome/mac laptop. And I'll add the Wilder doc to my ever-growing list! I still need to watch the Steve Martin one! Oy. I'm making my way through One Day though, and will check in when I get to the end.
One other recommendation, which I approve you sharing in a future post, is the HBO/Max comedy series Fantasmas. It's strange with a capital S, but in all the best ways. I have only watched the first two episodes but the creativity and surreal smarts is off the charts. Cameos by Steve Buscemi and Paul Dano are amazing.
I didn't watch Bridgerton when it came out back in the day since period dramas aren't really my thing, but this review made me think maybe I need to give it a try!
You should! Period dramas are my thing as you likely know but plenty of people I know who don’t dig them have watched and enjoyed. There’s an entertainment factor that Shonda Rhimes gets. It’s a fully immersive experience.
Thanks for the mention. I loved this version of "Emma". Anya-Taylor Joy is also great in "The Witch" (hard movie to watch, though) and "Last Night in Soho" (interesting story).
Thanks for these recos. I haven’t seen “The Witch” but really enjoyed “Last Night in SoHo” and her performance in “The Menu” with Ralph Fiennes is outstanding
Thank you for the note about the Wilder documentary- as a fan, I might want to take a look.
Did you read the autobiography? To me, it was the video book version of this makes sense.
I need to read that.

It's on Amazon. It's completely over the top (by design), but even with that context, it's wild to watch it through a 2024 lens.
Lol. That crossover is my kinda chaos.
Ahhhhh thanks for the Bridgerton shout out! Two years between seasons is too long to wait, but it is a sacrifice I am willing to make. 😉
Love all your recommendations! Can’t wait to catch up on BRATS soon!

I had sworn off my previous Bridgerton addiction. Now I’m tempted to cave into it again!
Oh come on Kym! Join the club. It’s only 4-6 hours of your life every two years.
Well…since you put it that way…😉

Forgot about The Menu. You're right.
