"Fingernails" Review - Listen š§
Breaking down love, loss, and connection certainty without the risk.
Premise: In a 90s alternate reality, a test has been developed to assess for soulmate compatibility. It requires that couples have their fingernails pulled out via pliers, and these fingernails are then tested in an easy bake oven (pretty much) which can say with 0/50/100% the love match viability.
Sound scary?
This week, I sit down with Quinn Francis of
to review this premise and its themes. is an actor, podcaster and contributes to and Frame Rated.š§ Listen as we go deep on love, technology, the power of pain, and intimacy. We also discuss an alternate ending, which Iām here 100% here for.
Fingernails is streaming on Apple TV+
Grade: B+
The acting here is this filmās redemption. Ryan (Jeremy Allen White - Shameless (Lip) and most recently from The Bear) and Anna (Jessie Buckley, Women Talking, Fargo) play the young couple with 100% compatibility so they should be content. But theyāre not, or rather sheās not. Theyāve fallen into a staid routine in their relationship - but itās clear the two of them still love each other very much.
Of the two, Anna is the more outwardly active in trying to connect deeply with Ryan through activities like dancing and the pottery class but sheās also the one lying to him, repeatedly.Ā In the course of the film, Anna meets Amir (Riz Ahmed) at The Love Institute where they work together to conduct intimacy exercises for couples and ultimately administer the love match test. Heās at first her mentor and then grows into someone more as their relationship develops.

As referenced on the podcast, Quinnās analysis of Alien (1979):
So glad you are doing podcasts agai , Beth! And if itās been going on for a while and Iāve overlooked them, apologies! I havenāt seen Fingernails yet (other than my own way too dirty ones) but youāve convinced me that I need to see it.
I found the discussion completely fascinating and I was happy to hear you shout out Hidden Brain, which is one of my faves.
