Introducing the 2024 Best in TV & Film
Hint: You get to cast your vote (and write in your nominations)
Hi Everyone! Important Update.
Voting and Nominations are NOW open for the Best in 2024 TV & Film.
All the important details are in the voting form, but first, a reminder about what this is…
Substack Choice: 2024 Nominations for Best in Film & TV
This is a place where Substack film and TV fans can nominate and vote for the shows and films that moved them in the past year.
Backstory: The idea for this originated from my disappointment over "Somebody Somewhere" (HBO) getting the shaft with zero nominations from the Golden Globes, but it grew from there. "Industry" was also snubbed. I recognized that I hadn't been satisfied with the state of awards show honors in a while.
Then I thought, here on Substack, we are empowered to be creative and reimagine things. What better way to honor our cinematic consumption (and delights) than having ALL OF US weigh in on the year's best TV and film content?
Criteria: The shows and films that moved us and we remembered long after the credits rolled. The ones that prompted us to go down dark Google rabbit holes (c'mon "Chimp Crazy" fans - I see you!), propelled by curiosity and a need to understand and empathize - to broaden our definition of humanity. Oftentimes, it's the stuff that humored us and let levity in, in darker moments. (See: "Somebody Somewhere")
Nomination Notes: Categories are loosely modeled after the Golden Globes awards, with sensical changes ("dramedy" works better than "comedy" for example. Couldn't resist "rom dram" category and I will have a true crime/documentary category). Categories like "Best Platonic Coupling" and "Quirky Shows with Heart" were absolutely necessary. For Awards Show purists, the categories do not include all GG categories. Feel free to write in nominations as well for each of the categories.

Matthew Spence- Shout out for contributions to the film categories and the poll. Thank you. 🏆
Voting closes on 12/31. I’m still deciding if we should do a Zoom party on January 4th. It’s based on interest, so let me know in the comments. Restack this and share!
The first step is filling this out 👇
If you haven’t seen all of these, don’t despair.

Up Next
On Monday, I’ll screen the new Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Hal Chalamet. I'll follow up with a review. Boyd Holbrook plays Johnny Cash in the film, which might be the best news since Joaquin Phoenix played him.
I didn’t see everything on the list so I didn’t feel I could genuinely participate. What’s Letterboxd?
So I voted for what I’d seen on the basis of whether I liked it or not 🤪
